My account is full of shared files - How can I delete them to free up space?

My account is entirely full with files other people shared to me.  I have no personal files stored.

If I attempt to delete any files from the folder mirrored to my desktop account, it says I need permissions and won't allow me to delete.  If I go to the Dropbox website, I can't find a button that allows me to delete a file.

How can I delete some of the files shared to me?  Will that delete those files on someone else's machine?

Yes, I understand the way it works.  It's a dumb design to unnecessarily duplicate storage space.  And it introduces the problem of keeping multiple copies synchronized.

If a view-only link is the solution, than the recipient should be able to determine he wants a view-only link, not just the sender.

An alternative solution would be to allow downloading of files from Dropbox and subsequent deletion of those files from Dropbox WITHOUT unsubscribing from the folder.

It works this way because you're not just getting access to the files in someone else's account. You're getting a copy of the files in your own account, and as the files exist in your account, they take up space.

That's what Hannah was suggesting when she said you could ask the owner for a view-only shared link to the files instead. You would be able to view any files in the share without adding them to your own account.

Otherwise if you're a member of the share, then the files will exist in your account taking up space.

It says 88 members.  It doesn't say anything if I click on x members.  If I click on Permissions it says I don't have permissions to manage the folder.

The only way listed to add storage for free is to refer other people.  There is no one for me to refer, and I need less storage, not more.  Just need to delete some files shared to me to free up space.

Don't even understand why files shared to me take up space in my account - all my account should need is links, not the full file.

Thanks for the update, hspindel, however, I think I'll need a couple of clarifications here.

If you locate the folder on this page, then navigate to the "who can access" column, does it say "only you" for this folder? Or does it say "X members"?

And if you click on "X members", what kind of permission does it show next to your name?

Additionally, the article I linked previously provides ways to add extra space to your account for free as well.

I will however pass your feedback along to our team.

I do not have edit access to the folders, and even if I did, it would be grossly unfair of me to delete files from the accounts of others.  There is no one to ask for a view-only link.  These files were shared ages ago.

I have no interest in paying for additional space.

Dropbox absolutely needs to add the ability to delete individual files.

I see. I'm afraid that if you have edit access to the folder and you delete files from within the folder, they'll also get deleted for the rest of the members.

If you want, you can ask them to share the folder through a "view-only" link instead.

And if you need to add files to the folder, they can send you a file request. Those files won't take up space in your account.

Lastly, if you want to add some extra space to your account, you can follow the suggestions here.

    I hope this helps!

Thank you for the response.  Unfortunately I don't want to remove access to a shared folder, but just some files within that folder.

Hey hspindel, thanks for taking the time to post to our Community!

If you want to free up space taken up by shared folders, but don't want to delete them for other members, you can remove your own access.

You can follow the steps here to accomplish that.

Let me know how it goes!
